Possible Causes

Welded main power contactor, Failed contactor coil, Control PCB contactor driver fault, Mechanical obstruction in contactor mechanism

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Danger: A welded contactor is a serious safety fault. Do not attempt to bypass or force the relay.

  • Step 1 – Power down: Turn OFF the dedicated breaker and verify the charger is fully de-energized.
  • Step 2 – Listen for contactor operation: After turning the breaker back ON and initiating a charge, listen for a distinct click from inside the Shell Recharge unit. No click or a continuous hum may indicate a contactor issue.
  • Step 3 – Check for stuck contacts (technician only): With power OFF and cover removed, visually inspect the main contactor module for signs of overheating, discoloration, or melted plastic.
  • Step 4 – Do not use if E03 persists: If the charger reports E03 repeatedly, discontinue use. A welded or failing contactor can leave live voltage on the output when it should be off.
  • Step 5 – Professional replacement: Have a qualified EVSE technician or Shell Recharge service replace the main power contactor assembly and test operation according to manufacturer procedures.
