Possible Causes
Jammed connector lock pin, Failed lock actuator motor, Broken lock position sensor, Foreign object in socket area
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Mechanical caution: Do not force the plug out if the lock is engaged; you may damage the socket.
- Step 1 – Stop charging: End the charging session via the app or RFID and wait for the charger to attempt to unlock.
- Step 2 – Listen for lock movement: You should hear a small motor or click. If you hear straining or nothing at all, the lock may be jammed.
- Step 3 – Inspect socket: With no power flowing, gently inspect the Type 2 socket for debris or ice (in cold climates). Remove any obstruction carefully.
- Step 4 – Power cycle: Turn the breaker off for 30 seconds, then on, and try to unlock again via the app.
- Step 5 – Manual release (if provided): Some models have a manual release mechanism accessible from inside the housing. Refer to the Shell Recharge manual and only operate it with power off.
- Step 6 – If E17 persists: The lock actuator or its sensor may need replacement by a technician.
