Possible Causes
Defective RCM sensor coil, Loose RCM harness connection, Failed RCM self-test relay, Damage from previous earth fault event
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Shock protection: The RCM is critical for detecting DC and AC leakage currents. Do not bypass it.
- Step 1 – Power cycle: Turn off the breaker for 60 seconds, then back on to re-run the RCM self-test.
- Step 2 – Test button: If your Shell Recharge model has an RCM test button, press it according to the manual to verify operation.
- Step 3 – Internal check (technician only): With power off, ensure the conductors pass correctly through the RCM sensor core and that the sensor’s cable is firmly connected to the main PCB.
- Step 4 – Replacement: If E18 persists, the RCM sensor or associated circuitry must be replaced by a qualified EVSE technician.
