Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the charger’s upstream breaker and verify no voltage is present at the charger before opening any covers. Do not work on live EVSE circuits.
- Power-cycle the charger: Turn the breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then ON. Reconnect to the vehicle and see if E01 clears.
- Inspect the J1772 connector: Check the handle for cracks, bent pins, or debris in the connector. Clean gently with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol. Do not use metal tools on the pins.
- Check cable strain: Look for kinks, crushed sections, or cuts along the charge cable from the charger to the handle. If the cable jacket is damaged or feels soft/flat in one area, the pilot or proximity conductors may be broken.
- Test with another vehicle: If possible, plug into a different EV to rule out a vehicle-side inlet issue.
- Internal inspection (advanced): With power OFF and cover removed, verify the pilot wire connections from the main control board to the cable gland are secure and not burned. If the pilot circuit components on the control board appear damaged (burn marks, bulged components), the board likely needs replacement.
If E01 persists after these checks, discontinue use and contact a qualified EVSE technician or United Chargers support before further operation.
