Possible Causes
Cumulative leakage from multiple circuits on same RCD, Faulty internal RCD/DC leakage module, Moisture inside charger causing leakage, Damaged Type 2 cable with leakage to earth
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Repeated RCD tripping indicates a potential shock hazard. Do not bypass or replace with a higher rating without investigation.
- 1. Isolate other loads: Temporarily disconnect other circuits on the same RCD to see if tripping only occurs when the EV charger is active. If so, consider a dedicated RCD for the charger.
- 2. Inspect for moisture: Open the charger and look for water ingress or condensation. Dry thoroughly and improve sealing.
- 3. Test with another cable and vehicle: Replace the Type 2 cable and, if possible, test with a different EV to rule out vehicle-side leakage.
- 4. RCD test: Use an RCD tester to verify trip thresholds and times of the house RCD/RCBO. Replace if faulty.
- 5. Internal leakage module: If external causes are excluded, test and replace the internal RCD/DC leakage sensor module as per Vestel procedures.
