Volkswagen
Charging Current Derated / Limited Output
Charging is very slow compared to expected rate; no error codes; VW wallbox and vehicle both show charging but at reduced kW.

Possible Causes
VW wallbox maximum current set too low in configuration, Dynamic load management limiting current due to house load, Undersized supply cable causing voltage drop, Overtemperature derating in power module
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Configuration changes should respect the circuit breaker rating and cable size. When in doubt, consult an electrician.
- Check app settings: In the VW wallbox app, verify the maximum charging current and adjust up to (but not above) the value allowed by your installation (e.g., 16 A or 32 A).
- Review load management: If connected to a VW home energy manager, check whether other large loads (ovens, heat pumps) are active and temporarily switch them off to see if charging speed increases.
- Monitor temperature: If the charger frequently gets warm and slows down, improve ventilation or reduce ambient temperature.
- Check vehicle settings: Some EVs allow limiting AC charging current in the car’s menu; ensure it is not set to ‘reduced’ or ‘low’.
If slow charging persists with correct settings and moderate temperatures, an electrician should check supply voltage under load and inspect the VW wallbox power module for faults.
