Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the VW wallbox circuit breaker and any external disconnect before touching the cable or charger. Never work on live high‑voltage parts.
- Power cycle the system: Switch the wallbox breaker OFF for 2 minutes, then ON. Reboot any connected VW We Connect / wallbox app and retry charging.
- Inspect the Type 2 plug: Unplug from the vehicle. Check the Type 2 connector for bent, recessed, or burned pins and for dirt or corrosion. Clean gently with a dry, lint‑free cloth only. Do not use liquids.
- Check cable seating: Firmly insert the Type 2 plug into the vehicle inlet until you hear/feel the lock engage. A loose plug can interrupt the control pilot signal.
- Try another cable or vehicle: If your VW wallbox has a fixed cable, try another EV at the same charger. If it has a socket, try a different Type 2 cable. If another vehicle or cable works, the fault is likely in the original cable or vehicle inlet.
- Check for moisture: If the plug or vehicle inlet is wet, allow it to dry completely before retrying. Do not use heat guns or hair dryers.
If E001 persists with multiple vehicles and cables, the internal control pilot board in the VW wallbox is likely faulty. Contact a qualified EVSE technician or Volkswagen Energy Products support.
