Charging session stops immediately after plugging in; VW wallbox shows E002 and red or amber LED; vehicle reports ‘Charging station error’.

Safety first: Do not repeatedly reset a charger that trips on ground fault. There may be a real shock hazard. If you smell burning or see smoke, keep power off and call a professional immediately.

• Visual inspection: With power OFF at the breaker, inspect the VW wallbox housing, cable, and plug for cuts, crushed sections, burn marks, or melted plastic.
• Dry the area: If the charger or cable has been exposed to rain, sprinklers, or washing, allow everything to dry for several hours. Ensure the cable gland and rear housing of the VW wallbox are not visibly open or cracked.
• Reset the breaker: Turn the dedicated VW wallbox breaker OFF, wait 30 seconds, then ON. If there is a separate RCD/RCBO feeding the charger, reset it as well.
• Test with another vehicle: Plug in a different EV if available. If E002 only occurs with one vehicle, the leakage may be on the vehicle side.
• Check cable routing: Ensure the cable is not pinched in a door, under a tire, or wrapped tightly around sharp edges.

If E002 recurs immediately after reset with different vehicles, the internal residual current detection module or power module in the VW wallbox is likely defective. Do not bypass safety devices. Contact a certified EVSE technician or Volkswagen service.
