Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If the housing is very hot or you smell burning plastic, switch off the breaker immediately and do not use the charger until inspected.
- Check ventilation: Make sure the VW wallbox front and side vents are not covered by objects, insulation, or vegetation. Maintain the clearance specified in the installation manual.
- Reduce charging current: In the VW wallbox app or web interface (if available), lower the maximum charging current (e.g., from 32 A to 16–20 A) and test again. This reduces heat generation.
- Inspect installation location: If the charger is installed in direct sun or in a small, unventilated garage, consider shading or improving airflow.
- Listen for fan operation: During charging, place your ear near (but not touching) the housing. You should hear the internal cooling fan on higher‑power VW wallbox models. No fan noise under heavy load may indicate a failed fan.
If E004 persists in moderate ambient temperatures with clear ventilation, an internal temperature sensor, cooling fan, or power module may be defective. A qualified technician should open the VW wallbox, check for loose terminals, discoloration, and test the fan and thermistors.
