Possible Causes

Stuck or broken Type 2 connector lock pin in VW wallbox, Foreign object in socket locking slot, Faulty lock actuator motor, Lock position sensor failure on VW wallbox socket

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before attempting to inspect the socket area. Do not insert tools into the socket with power on.

  • Inspect the socket: If your VW wallbox has a Type 2 socket (not a tethered cable), look inside with a flashlight. Check for stones, ice, or debris around the locking pin area.
  • Gently test lock movement: With power OFF and no cable inserted, gently press the lock pin (if accessible) with a non‑conductive plastic tool to see if it moves freely. Do not force it.
  • Check cable alignment: Ensure the Type 2 plug is fully inserted and straight. A partially inserted plug can prevent the lock from engaging.
  • Power cycle: Restore power and listen for the lock actuator when plugging in. A repeated clicking or no sound at all can indicate a failed actuator.

If E005 continues, the lock actuator or lock sensor inside the VW wallbox socket assembly likely needs replacement. This requires disassembly and should be performed by an EVSE technician familiar with Volkswagen wallbox hardware.
