Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Switch OFF the dedicated breaker. Allow the charger to cool if it feels warm to the touch.
- Verify breaker and wiring rating: Confirm the charger’s configured maximum current in the Volvo app or DIP switch settings matches the circuit breaker and cable size (e.g., 32 A charger on 40 A breaker with appropriate wire gauge).
- Inspect output terminals: With power OFF and cover removed, check the tightness of the line and neutral conductors at the output terminals and contactor. Use a torque screwdriver to match the manufacturer’s specified torque. Look for discoloration or melted insulation.
- Check cable condition: Examine the fixed output cable for cuts, kinks, or crushed sections that could cause internal shorts. Replace the cable if any damage is found.
- Reset configuration: If the charger allows software configuration, reset to factory defaults and re‑enter the correct current limit according to your installation.
- Test again: Restore power and start a charge session while monitoring for E04. If the error appears immediately with no load, the internal CT or control board may be faulty.
Persistent E04 with correct wiring and configuration indicates a defective current sensor or control board. Contact a qualified EVSE technician or Volvo support for CT or board replacement.
