Freezer displays E5 and may not cool or may short-cycle
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Critical safety: Unplug the freezer. Work at the rear only if you are comfortable around mains wiring. Do not open the sealed refrigeration system.
Steps:
- 1. Listen for compressor behavior: After plugging in (for testing only), note if the compressor hums then clicks off, does not start at all, or starts briefly. Then unplug again before working.
- 2. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower cover to expose the compressor, start device, and control module.
- 3. Inspect start device: On non-inverter AEG freezers, a PTC start relay and overload protector are mounted on the compressor terminals. Check for burn marks, rattling pieces inside the relay, or melted plastic.
- 4. Test start relay/PTC: Disconnect and measure resistance according to specifications (usually low ohms). Replace if open, cracked, or obviously burnt.
- 5. Inverter models: If your AEG freezer uses an inverter compressor, inspect the inverter board for bulged capacitors or burnt components. Ensure all plugs are fully seated.
- 6. Wiring check: Verify tight connections on compressor terminals and ground. Repair any overheated or loose spade connectors.
- 7. Replace faulty module: If the start device or inverter board is suspect, replace with the correct AEG part number.
Important: If the compressor is mechanically locked or drawing excessive current, it may need replacement, which requires a refrigeration engineer with proper tools and certification.
