Possible Causes

Failed cabinet thermistor, Thermistor wiring harness damage, Corroded thermistor connector, Control board misreading sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing panels or handling wiring. Use insulated tools and avoid working on a wet floor.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Power cycle the unit: Unplug the freezer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. If E1 returns after a few minutes, continue.
  • Locate the cabinet thermistor: On most Amana uprights, the thermistor is clipped to the evaporator cover or liner wall inside the freezer, usually behind a small plastic cover.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring: Remove the cover, visually inspect the thermistor and its two-wire harness for cuts, pinches, or corrosion at the connector. Reseat the connector firmly.
  • Test resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor from the harness and measure resistance with a multimeter. At about 32°F (0°C) many Amana NTC thermistors read roughly 8–12 kΩ (check service sheet if available). If it reads open (OL) or 0 Ω, it is defective.
  • Check continuity to the control: If the thermistor tests good, check continuity from the thermistor connector back to the main control board in the control housing. Repair any broken or shorted wires.
  • Replace faulty parts: If the thermistor is out of spec, replace it with an OEM Amana/Whirlpool cabinet thermistor kit. If wiring and thermistor are good but E1 persists, the electronic control board may be misreading the sensor and should be replaced.

When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable testing resistance or accessing the control board, contact a qualified appliance technician.
