Possible Causes

Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor out of position on evaporator coil, Broken thermistor harness, Faulty electronic control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before removing any panels. Sharp metal edges are present around the evaporator cover.

Steps:

  • Access the evaporator area: Empty the lower shelves, remove baskets, and take off the rear interior panel (evaporator cover) by removing screws or clips.
  • Locate the evaporator thermistor: It is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted in a small well on the evaporator assembly.
  • Check placement: Ensure the thermistor is firmly attached to the tubing or in its holder. A loose sensor can cause E2. Reclip or secure it as needed.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for frost-damaged, brittle, or broken wires leading from the thermistor to the harness. Repair or replace damaged wiring using appropriate connectors.
  • Test the thermistor: With the freezer unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to the expected value from the tech sheet (commonly 8–12 kΩ near freezing). Replace if open, shorted, or far out of range.
  • Control board check: If the thermistor and wiring are good, the main control board in the control housing may be defective. Inspect for burnt spots or swollen components and replace the board if necessary.

Note: After replacing the thermistor or control, clear the error by unplugging the unit for 5 minutes.
