Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer. The compressor area contains high-voltage components.
Procedure:
- Access compressor compartment: Pull the freezer away from the wall and remove the lower rear access panel.
- Inspect start device: On Amana freezers, the start relay and overload are mounted on the side of the compressor under a plastic cover. Remove the cover carefully.
- Check for burning or rattling: If the relay smells burnt, is discolored, or rattles when shaken, it is likely failed. Replace with the correct Amana/Whirlpool OEM start device kit.
- Test the run capacitor: If equipped, disconnect the capacitor and test with a capacitance meter. Replace if out of spec or bulged.
- Verify wiring: Ensure all wires are tight on the compressor terminals and start device. Repair any overheated or loose connectors.
- Control board check: If the start components are good but the compressor never receives power, the main control board may be defective and require replacement.
Warning: Do not attempt to open or braze the sealed system. If the compressor itself is locked or shorted, contact a licensed refrigeration technician.
