E5 appears on the display, freezer may not start cooling or may shut down unexpectedly.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Critical safety: Work on compressor electrics only with the appliance unplugged. Do not attempt sealed system repairs without proper certification.
Basic checks:
- 1. Ventilation and condenser: Ensure the freezer has adequate space around it and that the rear condenser is clean. Overheating can trigger overload protection and cause E5.
- 2. Access compressor components: Remove the lower rear service panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, overload protector, and wiring.
- 3. Inspect start relay and overload: Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or a rattling sound when you shake the relay (a sign of internal damage).
- 4. Replace start device: If the relay or PTC looks damaged, replace it with an "Amica Compressor Start Relay/PTC" matched to your compressor model. Also replace the overload protector if discolored or cracked.
- 5. Capacitor check (if present): Some models use a start or run capacitor. If bulged or leaking, replace with the same µF rating and voltage.
- 6. Test run: Reassemble, restore power, and listen. If the compressor hums briefly then clicks off repeatedly, the compressor itself may be mechanically seized and require professional replacement.
When to call a technician: If new start components do not resolve E5, the compressor or main control board is likely faulty and should be handled by a refrigeration specialist.
