Possible Causes

Normal automatic defrost cycle active, User-initiated defrost mode, Control board timing defrost period

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: On many Avanti frost-free freezers, dF or DEF simply indicates the unit is in a scheduled defrost cycle and is not an error.

Steps:

  • Wait for cycle to complete: A typical defrost cycle lasts 15–30 minutes. The compressor will be off and interior temperature may rise slightly.
  • Check for abnormal duration: If dF remains on for more than 1 hour and the unit is warming excessively, there may be a defrost control issue (see defrost-related faults above).
  • Power reset: If the display is stuck in dF, unplug the freezer for 5–10 minutes, then restore power. If it immediately returns to dF and cooling never resumes, the control board may be faulty.

Warning: Do not repeatedly unplug the unit during normal defrost; this can interfere with proper operation.
