Possible Causes

Failed evaporator temperature sensor, Sensor wiring harness damaged by ice or rubbing on evaporator, Corroded connector at control board, Faulty main control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal components. Wear cut-resistant gloves when working near sharp evaporator fins.

Steps:

  • Defrost first: If the evaporator area is heavily iced, unplug the freezer and allow it to defrost completely (use towels to catch water). This prevents damage to the sensor and wiring during inspection.
  • Access the evaporator: Remove the interior rear panel inside the freezer compartment to expose the evaporator coil. The evaporator sensor is usually clipped to the coil or attached to the tubing with a clip or tape.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring: Look for broken insulation, corroded connectors, or a sensor that has come loose from the coil. Reseat any loose connectors.
  • Test the sensor: Disconnect the sensor from the harness and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the expected NTC value (commonly 5k–10k ohms at 77°F / 25°C; resistance should change smoothly with temperature). If open or shorted, replace the sensor.
  • Check continuity of harness: With the unit unplugged, check continuity from the sensor connector to the control board connector. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  • Replace faulty parts: If the sensor and wiring are good but E1 persists, replace the main control board.

Note: After replacement, clear the error by unplugging for 5 minutes, then restore power.
