Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Weak or locked compressor, Low line voltage or unstable power supply, Faulty main control board compressor driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the freezer before accessing the compressor compartment. The compressor and nearby components can be hot.

Steps:

  • Check power supply: Ensure the freezer is plugged directly into a properly grounded wall outlet (no extension cords). Use a different outlet if possible. If lights dim when the compressor tries to start, there may be a household wiring issue.
  • Access compressor area: Remove the rear lower cover to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
  • Inspect start device: Remove the start relay/PTC from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, it is likely defective and should be replaced.
  • Test compressor windings: With the unit unplugged, remove all wires from the compressor terminals and measure resistance between each pair (C-R, C-S, R-S). You should see finite resistance values and no open circuits. Also check each terminal to ground (compressor shell); there should be no continuity. If windings are shorted to ground or open, the compressor is bad.
  • Replace start relay/overload: If the compressor tests good, install a new OEM start relay/overload assembly designed for your Avanti model.
  • Control board: If the compressor never receives power (verify with a meter) despite a call for cooling, the main control board may be faulty and require replacement.

Note: Compressor replacement and sealed system work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.
