Possible Causes
Defrost heater not energizing, Defrost thermostat stuck open, Faulty defrost relay on control board, Broken wiring in defrost circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer and allow ice to melt before working near the evaporator. Use towels to manage water.
Steps:
- Manual defrost: With the unit unplugged, leave the door open until all frost is gone. This may temporarily restore cooling but does not fix the root cause.
- Access defrost components: Remove the interior rear panel to expose the evaporator, defrost heater, and thermostat.
- Test heater and thermostat: Use a multimeter to check continuity of the defrost heater and thermostat (see E3 procedure). Replace any open components.
- Check wiring and connectors: Inspect all connectors between the heater, thermostat, and control board for burns or looseness. Repair as needed.
- Control board relay: If heater and thermostat are good, the defrost relay on the main board may not be switching. Replace the main control board if no voltage is supplied to the heater during a defrost cycle.
Tip: Mark the date of repair and monitor for recurring frost over the next 2–3 weeks.
