Freezer interior smells bad or of chemicals, even after cleaning

Safety first: If you suspect a chemical or burning smell from the rear, unplug immediately and ventilate the area.

Steps:

• Remove all food: Discard spoiled items.
• Deep clean interior: Wipe all surfaces with a solution of baking soda and warm water. Clean door gaskets and shelves.
• Clean drain: Flush the defrost drain with warm water and a mild disinfectant to remove trapped residues.
• Air out: Leave the door open for several hours with the unit unplugged to allow odors to dissipate.
• If you notice an oily residue or strong chemical smell near the compressor or pipework, there may be a refrigerant leak. Contact a refrigeration technician; do not attempt sealed system repairs yourself.
