Possible Causes

Compressor not starting, Start relay or PTC relay failure, Condenser fan not running, Refrigerant leak in sealed system

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing any panels. Do not puncture any sealed copper tubing. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, stop and call a certified technician.

Step-by-step checks:

  • Verify door closure and loading: Make sure the door is closing fully, the gasket is not obstructed, and the unit is not overpacked blocking air vents.
  • Check condenser ventilation: Pull the freezer away from the wall. Clean dust from the rear grille and condenser area with a soft brush and vacuum. Ensure at least 5–10 cm clearance around the unit.
  • Listen for compressor and fans: Plug the freezer back in. After a few minutes, check if the compressor at the back is running (low humming and slight vibration) and if the condenser fan (if fitted) is spinning.
  • If compressor is hot and clicking: Unplug the unit. Remove the lower rear service cover. Inspect the compressor start relay/PTC relay and overload protector on the compressor terminals for signs of burning or cracking. Replace the start relay/overload kit if damaged or if the compressor repeatedly clicks and stops.
  • If condenser fan is not running: With power disconnected, spin the fan blade by hand. If stiff or seized, replace the condenser fan motor. If it spins freely but never runs when the compressor is on, test for supply voltage at the fan connector (qualified person only) and replace the fan motor if it is not drawing current.
  • If interior is warm but compressor never starts: The main control board or temperature sensor may be faulty. Check wiring harnesses to the compressor and sensors for loose connections. If no obvious wiring issue is found, the electronic control module likely needs replacement.
  • If frost pattern is weak or only on part of the evaporator: This indicates a sealed system/refrigerant issue. Do not attempt DIY repair; contact an authorized Brandt service center.
