Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator NTC sensor, Corroded sensor connector, Damaged wiring harness to evaporator area, Faulty main control board sensor input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing interior panels. Edges of metal panels and evaporator fins can be sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps:
- Access evaporator compartment: Remove baskets and the rear interior panel inside the freezer to expose the evaporator coil (on no-frost models).
- Locate the evaporator sensor: It is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted in a small plastic holder near the coil.
- Inspect sensor and wiring: Check for ice buildup around the sensor, damaged insulation, or corroded connectors. Defrost any heavy ice with a hair dryer on low, keeping it away from plastic parts.
- Test the sensor: Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at a known temperature. Compare to Brandt's NTC chart. Replace the sensor if readings are out of range or intermittent when the wire is flexed.
- Check harness back to control board: Follow the sensor wires to the top or rear where they connect to the main board. Ensure the connector is fully seated and wires are not pinched.
- If sensor and wiring are good: The main control board may misread the sensor and should be replaced.
