Freezer shows AL09; unit may not defrost and may show heavy ice buildup

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before testing the heater. The heater operates at mains voltage and can cause electric shock.

Steps:

• Access evaporator and heater: Remove the interior rear panel to expose the evaporator coil and heater (usually a metal or glass-encased element at the bottom or woven through the coil).
• Visual inspection: Look for breaks, burn marks, or discoloration on the heater element and wiring.
• Continuity test: Disconnect the heater leads and measure resistance across the heater. An open circuit indicates a failed heater that must be replaced.
• Check thermal cut-out: Some Brandt models include a thermal fuse in series with the heater. Test for continuity; replace if open.
• Inspect connectors: Ensure all heater circuit connectors are tight and free of corrosion.
• If heater circuit is intact: The main control board may not be energizing the heater. Replace the board after verifying line voltage supply and wiring.
