Persistent Odour Contamination
Bad smell coming from inside the freezer even after cleaning
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Spilled food trapped in drain or under liners, Mould growth in door gasket folds, Long power outage causing food spoilage residues, Plastic components absorbed odours
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before deep cleaning. Wear gloves when handling spoiled food or mould.
Steps to remove odours:
- 1. Empty and defrost: Remove all food and shelves. Allow any ice to melt.
- 2. Clean thoroughly: Wash interior surfaces, baskets, and shelves with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and warm water. Pay attention to corners and seams.
- 3. Clean gasket: Pull back the door gasket folds and clean inside with mild detergent. Rinse and dry.
- 4. Flush drain: If fitted, clean the defrost drain with warm water and a mild disinfectant.
- 5. Deodorise: Leave an open container of bicarbonate of soda or activated charcoal inside for several days while running to absorb residual odours.
Note: Severe contamination may permanently affect insulation odour; in extreme cases, replacement of the appliance may be more economical.
