Possible Causes

Open or shorted defrost sensor, Failed defrost thermostat (bi‑metal), Loose or corroded defrost sensor wiring, Main control PCB defrost circuit fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect mains power before accessing the evaporator or defrost components.

Steps to address E3:

  • 1. Access defrost components: Remove freezer drawers and the internal rear panel to expose the evaporator and defrost assembly.
  • 2. Identify defrost sensor/thermostat: Caple freezers may use an NTC sensor, a bi‑metal thermostat, or both clipped to the evaporator tubing.
  • 3. Inspect for damage: Look for cracked housings, burnt connectors, or wires broken near the sensor or thermostat.
  • 4. Test continuity: For a bi‑metal thermostat, test continuity with a multimeter when the thermostat is cold (should be closed). For an NTC defrost sensor, measure resistance and compare to spec. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
  • 5. Replace faulty parts: Unclip or unscrew the defective sensor/thermostat and install the new one in the same position on the evaporator coil. Ensure good thermal contact.
  • 6. Check wiring to PCB: Trace the harness back to the main control PCB, looking for chafing or corrosion. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  • 7. Test operation: Reassemble, restore power, and run a manual defrost cycle if the model allows. Confirm that E3 clears and that frost build‑up reduces over the next 24–48 hours.

Warning: If you see signs of refrigerant oil or physical damage to the evaporator, stop and call a refrigeration technician.
