E5 error on display; compressor may not start or may short‑cycle
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Critical safety: Work on the compressor area only with the freezer unplugged. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system.
Steps to address E5:
- 1. Listen for compressor behaviour: After plugging in, listen at the back. Repeated clicking without sustained running suggests start relay or compressor issues.
- 2. Access compressor compartment: Remove the lower rear service panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and capacitor.
- 3. Inspect start components: Check the start relay/PTC module and capacitor for burn marks, cracks, or melted plastic. Ensure all spade connectors are tight.
- 4. Test start relay/PTC: With a multimeter, check for continuity between the appropriate terminals (refer to wiring diagram if available). Replace if open or visibly damaged.
- 5. Test start capacitor: Discharge the capacitor safely, then measure capacitance with a meter. Replace if more than ±10–15% out of rated value or if shorted/open.
- 6. Refit and test: Reassemble, restore power, and observe if the compressor now starts and E5 clears.
- 7. Suspect compressor or PCB: If new start components do not resolve the issue, the compressor windings or the main control PCB may be faulty. Testing compressor windings (resistance between terminals) can confirm; this is usually a job for a refrigeration technician.
Warning: Do not bypass overload protection or run the compressor with incorrect components; this can cause permanent damage or fire risk.
