Freezer displays E8 and may not cool properly; compressor may not start or may short-cycle.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Critical safety warning: The compressor and start components operate at mains voltage. Unplug the freezer before removing the rear cover. If you are not comfortable working around high voltage, contact a professional.
Steps to check E8:
- Access the compressor compartment: Unplug the unit and remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor and start device.
- Inspect the start relay and overload: The PTC relay and overload protector are usually housed in a plastic cover on the side of the compressor. Remove the cover and look for burnt smell, discoloration, or melted plastic.
- Check for loose connections: Ensure all spade terminals are tight on the compressor pins and start device.
- Test the PTC relay: With a multimeter, measure resistance across the relay terminals. A completely open or visibly burnt relay should be replaced.
- Test the overload protector: Check for continuity across the overload device. If it reads OL at room temperature, it is likely failed.
- Replace faulty start components: Install a compatible Costway compressor PTC start relay and overload protector. Match the part numbers and wiring orientation.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the compressor cover and rear panel, plug in the freezer, and observe if the compressor starts smoothly and E8 clears.
Important: If the compressor hums and clicks off even with new start components, the compressor itself may be mechanically locked or internally damaged and will require professional replacement.
