Danby freezer shows E5 and may shut down or run erratically.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. The compressor and condenser components can be very hot; allow them to cool before touching.
Steps to address E5:
- Check ventilation: Ensure there is adequate clearance around the freezer (typically at least 2–4 inches at sides and back). Clean dust from the condenser coils and rear grille with a vacuum and soft brush.
- Inspect condenser fan (if present): On some upright models, verify the condenser fan is spinning freely and not obstructed. Replace the condenser fan motor if it does not run when the compressor is on.
- Check compressor overload: Access the compressor compartment and locate the overload/relay assembly on the compressor terminals. Inspect for burn marks or melted plastic.
- Test overload device: With power disconnected, remove the overload and check continuity. An open overload at room temperature indicates failure and it should be replaced.
- Compressor sensor (if fitted): Some models use a clip-on temperature sensor on the compressor shell. Inspect and test it for continuity or resistance per service data; replace if open or shorted.
- Control board: If ventilation is good, the fan works, and overload/sensor test good, the main control board may be falsely detecting an overheat condition and require replacement.
Warning: Do not bypass safety devices like overloads or thermal protectors. If the compressor is extremely hot or noisy, consult a professional technician.
