Possible Causes
Open defrost thermostat or thermal fuse, Failed defrost temperature sensor, Loose or corroded connectors in defrost circuit, Faulty main control board defrost input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. Use caution with sharp metal edges and hot components if recently running.
- 1. Inspect frost pattern: Remove the interior rear panel to view the evaporator. If it is completely encased in ice, the defrost system is likely at fault.
- 2. Locate defrost thermostat/fuse: On Electrolux freezers, the defrost thermostat or thermal fuse is clipped to the evaporator tubing. A separate defrost sensor may also be present.
- 3. Test for continuity: With the unit unplugged and the evaporator still cold, disconnect the thermostat/fuse and check continuity with a multimeter. An open reading indicates a failed component that must be replaced.
- 4. Check defrost sensor (if present): Measure resistance of the defrost NTC sensor and compare to spec. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- 5. Inspect connectors and wiring: Look for burnt, corroded, or loose connectors in the defrost circuit from the evaporator area to the control board.
- 6. Manually defrost: While waiting for parts, you can temporarily restore cooling by fully defrosting the evaporator with the unit unplugged and doors open, using towels to catch water. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice.
- 7. Replace control board if all else checks: If thermostat/fuse, sensor, and wiring are good, the control board may not be recognizing defrost temperature. Replace the main control board.
