Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Restricted capillary tube or filter-drier, Weak compressor, Severely frosted evaporator reducing airflow

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing panels. Sealed system repairs require EPA-certified technicians and specialized tools.

  • 1. Check temperature and run time: Confirm that the freezer is not reaching set temperature and that the compressor runs almost constantly.
  • 2. Inspect frost pattern: Remove the interior rear panel and observe the evaporator. A normal pattern is a light, even frost over most of the coil. A partial frost pattern (only at the inlet) suggests a sealed system issue.
  • 3. Clean condenser: Ensure the condenser coils (rear or bottom) are clean and the condenser fan (if present) is running. Poor airflow can mimic sealed system problems.
  • 4. Defrost if iced over: If the evaporator is a solid block of ice, address defrost system faults first (heater, thermostat, sensor, control).
  • 5. Call a professional for sealed system diagnosis: If airflow and defrost are normal but EC persists with poor cooling and abnormal frost pattern, a licensed refrigeration technician must check pressures, locate leaks, and repair or recharge the system.
