Digital Essentials upright freezer shows E1 and interior temperature is too warm.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer from the mains before removing any panels or handling wiring. Use insulated tools and avoid working on a wet floor.
Steps to check and address E1:
- 1. Power reset: Unplug the freezer for 5–10 minutes, then plug it back in. If E1 clears temporarily and returns, continue with the checks.
- 2. Locate the cabinet sensor: On most Essentials freezers, the cabinet NTC sensor is clipped behind the inner liner, often near the top or rear wall. Access may require removing the interior plastic cover or light cover.
- 3. Inspect wiring: Check the sensor harness from the sensor to the main control PCB (usually behind the rear lower panel or in the control housing). Look for pinched, cut, or corroded wires and loose connectors. Reseat the plug firmly.
- 4. Test the sensor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor from the PCB and measure resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature (around 20–25°C), most Essentials NTC sensors read roughly 5–15 kΩ. An open circuit (OL) or 0 Ω indicates a failed sensor.
- 5. Replace if faulty: If readings are out of range or intermittent when you gently flex the wire, replace the cabinet NTC temperature sensor. Route the new sensor along the original path and secure it away from moving parts or sharp edges.
- 6. Check the control board: If a known-good sensor still triggers E1, inspect the main control PCB for burn marks, swollen capacitors, or water damage. If present, the main control PCB may need replacement, which is best done by a qualified technician.
When to call a professional: If you are not comfortable testing resistance or accessing the control PCB, or if replacing the sensor does not clear E1, contact an appliance technician.
