Freezer runs but does not get cold enough – food is soft or partially thawed.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the freezer before cleaning coils or accessing internal panels.
Steps to improve cooling:
- 1. Check temperature setting and loading: Ensure the thermostat is set to the recommended freezer setting (typically around -18°C). Avoid overpacking shelves, which blocks airflow.
- 2. Clean condenser coils: Pull the freezer away from the wall. Vacuum dust from the rear or bottom condenser coils using a brush attachment. For static-condenser models (coils in the cabinet walls), ensure adequate clearance around the unit.
- 3. Inspect evaporator frost pattern: Remove the interior rear panel and look at the evaporator coil. A light, even frost is normal. A solid block of ice indicates defrost failure (see defrost-related faults). Only a small section frosted suggests a sealed-system issue.
- 4. Check evaporator fan: Confirm the evaporator fan motor runs when the compressor is on. Replace if not running or noisy.
- 5. Defrost if iced: If the coil is encased in ice, unplug the freezer and fully defrost it. Then test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat/sensor and replace faulty parts.
Important: If the evaporator only frosts partially or the compressor runs constantly without reaching temperature, a refrigerant or compressor problem is likely and requires a refrigeration technician.
