Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Open or weak run capacitor, High compressor current draw (mechanical issue), Faulty control board compressor driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the freezer before working in the rear machine compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge safely before handling.

E5 suggests the control detects a problem starting or running the compressor.

  • Step 1 – Listen for symptoms: Plug in the unit and listen: repeated clicking from the compressor area without sustained running indicates start device issues.
  • Step 2 – Access compressor components: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and capacitor.
  • Step 3 – Inspect start relay: Remove the relay from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, replace it.
  • Step 4 – Test capacitor: Discharge the capacitor, then measure capacitance with a meter. Replace if more than ±10% off the rated value or if bulged/leaking.
  • Step 5 – Measure compressor winding resistance: With all wires removed, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. Look for shorts to ground or open windings. A shorted or open compressor requires professional replacement.
  • Step 6 – Control board: If start components and compressor test good, the control board may not be sending proper power to the compressor. Replace the board.
