Possible Causes

Normal power-up self-test, Main control board reset in progress, Power interruption or brownout, Loose display harness connection

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: This is usually not a fault. Do not open panels with power connected. If you must access wiring, unplug the freezer first.

  • Wait for self-test to complete: After a power outage or when first plugged in, GE Profile freezers may briefly show 88 on all display segments. Wait 30–60 seconds to see if the normal temperature display returns.
  • Check for control lock: If the display returns but buttons do not respond, look for a Control Lock icon and hold the lock key (often 3–5 seconds) to unlock.
  • Power cycle the unit: If 88 remains for more than 5 minutes, unplug the freezer for 2 minutes, then plug it back in. Observe whether the display returns to normal.
  • Inspect display harness (advanced): If you are comfortable and the unit is unplugged, remove the control panel cover and verify the ribbon cable or harness between the display and main control board is fully seated and not damaged.
  • Call service if persistent: If 88 remains and the compressor and fans do not run, the main control board or display board may have failed and should be diagnosed by a technician.
