Possible Causes

Failed defrost heater, Open defrost thermostat/bi-metal, Defective defrost relay on main control board, Faulty evaporator thermistor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Always unplug the freezer before accessing the evaporator or defrost components. Do not use knives or ice picks to remove ice.

  • Inspect for heavy frost: Remove the interior rear panel to view the evaporator. If it is encased in solid ice, the defrost system is likely not working.
  • Check defrost heater: Locate the heater at the bottom or around the evaporator coil. Test for continuity with a multimeter; replace if open.
  • Test defrost thermostat: The thermostat (bi-metal) is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing. When cold (below freezing), it should show continuity. Replace if it remains open when cold.
  • Manual defrost (temporary): To restore cooling temporarily, unplug the unit, remove food to a backup freezer, and allow all ice to melt. Use towels to catch water. Do not direct heat guns at plastic parts.
  • Control board check: If heater and thermostat test good, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and may need replacement.
