Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Damaged thermistor harness, Control board sensor input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing the evaporator cover. Edges of metal panels and coils can be sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
- Access the evaporator: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil (usually at the back of the freezer compartment).
- Locate the thermistor: It is typically clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted nearby in a plastic housing.
- Check mounting: Ensure the thermistor is firmly attached to the coil or bracket as designed. A loose sensor can cause incorrect readings.
- Inspect wiring: Look for broken insulation, corrosion at connectors, or pinched wires.
- Test and replace: Measure resistance at known temperature and compare to GE specifications. Replace the evaporator thermistor if readings are out of range or intermittent.
