Steps to address E3:
- Access the control housing: On many GE freezers, the ambient sensor is located near the user interface or control board, often in the top front of the cabinet. Remove the screws securing the control cover and gently lower it.
- Identify the ambient thermistor: Look for a small sensor on two thin wires leading to a vent or opening that senses room air. It may be clipped into a plastic holder.
- Check connections: Ensure the thermistor plug is fully seated on the control board. Look for corrosion, moisture, or broken wires. Clean contacts with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
- Test the sensor: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature, it should be near the specified value (often ~10kΩ at 77°F / 25°C). If the reading is open, shorted, or far off spec, the sensor is faulty.
- Replace if defective: Install a new GE ambient thermistor, routing the wires as originally installed and securing the sensor in its holder or vent.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the control cover, restore power, and verify that the E3 code clears and temperature settings respond normally.
If E3 persists: With a known-good sensor and wiring, the main control board is likely at fault and should be replaced by a professional.
