Possible Causes
Failed defrost thermistor on evaporator, Broken or shorted defrost sensor wiring, Poor connection at control board, Defective electronic control board defrost circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the freezer before removing the evaporator cover. Use gloves to protect hands from sharp metal edges.
- Step 1 – Access evaporator area: Remove baskets and shelves. Take off the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil and defrost thermistor (usually clipped to the tubing).
- Step 2 – Inspect sensor: Check that the thermistor is firmly attached to the evaporator and not hanging loose or encased in heavy ice. If encased, manually defrost with a hair dryer on low, keeping it moving and away from plastic.
- Step 3 – Test thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance at a known temperature (e.g., in ice water ~32°F/0°C). Compare to Gladiator spec. Replace if readings are incorrect.
- Step 4 – Check wiring and board: Inspect the harness from the thermistor to the control board for damage. If wiring is good and a new thermistor does not clear E3, replace the electronic control board.
