Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Defective run capacitor, Faulty inverter board (on variable-speed models), Internal compressor electrical fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the freezer before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge them properly before handling. If you smell burnt wiring, stop and call a professional.
- Step 1 – Access compressor area: Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and run capacitor (if equipped).
- Step 2 – Inspect for obvious damage: Look for burned or melted relay housing, loose connectors, or signs of overheating.
- Step 3 – Test start relay/PTC: Disconnect the relay from the compressor terminals. Shake it gently; if it rattles or shows burn marks, replace it with a Gladiator/Whirlpool-compatible start device.
- Step 4 – Test run capacitor: Use a capacitance meter to verify the capacitor value matches the rating on its label. Replace if out of tolerance or shorted.
- Step 5 – Evaluate compressor: If new start components do not resolve E5 and the compressor draws locked-rotor current or overheats quickly, the compressor itself may be failed and requires professional sealed-system service.
