Possible Causes
Door left open or not sealing, Recent large warm food load, Failed evaporator fan motor, Refrigerant leak or low charge, Compressor or start device failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the door is closed to prevent condensation and slipping hazards on the floor.
- Check door seal: Inspect the gasket for gaps, tears, or debris. Clean with warm soapy water and ensure the door closes fully.
- Allow recovery time: If you recently loaded large amounts of unfrozen food or had a power outage, allow 12–24 hours for temperature to stabilize. Avoid frequent door openings.
- Verify evaporator fan: Open the door and listen for the internal fan when the compressor is running. If silent, remove the inner rear panel and test the fan motor. Replace if seized or open.
- Check for frost pattern: Remove the inner panel and inspect the evaporator. A partial frost pattern or no frost may indicate a sealed system issue (refrigerant leak or restriction) requiring a professional technician.
- Monitor temperature: Use a freezer thermometer to confirm actual temperature. If it remains above -15°C (5°F) after 24 hours with normal load and good airflow, further diagnosis of compressor and sealed system is needed.
