Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice buildup blocking fan blades, Broken fan wiring harness, Faulty fan driver on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing interior panels. Beware of sharp metal edges and ice.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Listen for fan: With the door switch held closed (or taped down) and the unit running, you should normally hear the evaporator fan. If silent, proceed with inspection after unplugging.
- 2. Access fan assembly: Remove baskets and the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator and fan housing.
- 3. Check for ice obstruction: Look for ice around the fan blades or housing. If present, defrost the area carefully with warm air. Do not force the blades through ice.
- 4. Spin test: Gently spin the fan by hand. It should rotate freely without grinding. If stiff or seized, replace the fan motor.
- 5. Electrical test: Disconnect the fan motor connector and measure resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Also inspect the wiring back to the main board for damage.
- 6. Board output: If the motor tests good but does not receive voltage when the compressor is running, the main control board may have a failed fan driver and will need replacement.
