E5 error displayed, compressor may not start or may short-cycle frequently.

Safety: Unplug the freezer. Work only on a cold, non-running compressor. Do not attempt sealed system repairs (refrigerant) unless you are certified.

• Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor and electrical box.
• Inspect start components: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Inside you will find the PTC start relay and overload protector. Check for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burnt smell.
• Check connections: Ensure all spade connectors are tight on the relay and overload. Loose connections can cause intermittent E5 errors.
• Test the relay and overload: With a multimeter, test continuity through the overload (should be closed at room temperature). The PTC relay typically shows low resistance between its terminals; an open circuit or rattling pieces inside indicate failure.
• Test compressor windings: With the relay removed, measure resistance between the three compressor pins. You should see three different resistance values; none should be open or shorted to the compressor shell (check for ground fault).
• Replace faulty parts: If the relay or overload is defective, replace them with Hoover-approved compressor start relay and overload protector matched to your compressor model.
• Reassemble and test: Refit the terminal cover and rear panel, restore power, and listen for the compressor starting smoothly. Monitor for recurrence of E5.

Important: If the compressor windings are open/shorted or the compressor overheats and trips repeatedly, the compressor itself may be failing and requires a professional sealed-system repair or replacement.
