Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Failed compressor PTC device, Faulty compressor windings, Main control board relay failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Hotpoint freezer before removing any panels. Use insulated tools and avoid touching live terminals.

Steps:

  • Check power supply: Confirm the outlet has 220–240V (or 110–120V in some regions) using a multimeter. Verify the plug and power cord are not damaged.
  • Listen for compressor attempts: Plug the unit back in briefly and listen at the rear. If you hear a click and then silence every few minutes, the start relay/PTC may be faulty.
  • Access the compressor area: Unplug again, remove the lower rear service panel, and locate the compressor and its start relay/overload device on the side of the compressor.
  • Inspect the start relay: Remove the relay/PTC from the compressor pins. Shake it gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, it is likely defective.
  • Test the compressor windings: With a multimeter set to ohms, measure resistance between the three compressor terminals (C, S, R). You should see low but non-zero resistance and no continuity to ground (compressor shell). If windings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is faulty.
  • Replace suspect parts: If the compressor tests good, install a new OEM Hotpoint-compatible compressor start relay/overload kit. Refit the cover and restore power.
  • If still not running: The main control board relay may be defective. Visual inspection for burnt spots can help, but board-level repair is complex—consider replacing the control board or contacting a technician.
