Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice buildup blocking evaporator fan, Faulty door switch preventing fan operation, Wiring issue between fan and main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing internal panels. Sharp metal edges inside the freezer can cause cuts—wear gloves.
Steps:
- Check airflow: Open the freezer and feel for air movement from the vents. If the compressor is running but there is no airflow, suspect the evaporator fan.
- Test door switch: Press and hold the freezer door switch with the door open. On many Hotpoint models, the evaporator fan should run when the switch is pressed. If it starts, the switch is working; if not, continue.
- Access the evaporator fan: Remove shelves and baskets. Unscrew and remove the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil and fan assembly.
- Inspect for ice buildup: If the fan blades are encased in ice, defrost the unit fully by unplugging it and leaving the door open for several hours, or use a hair dryer on low heat (do not overheat plastic). Clear all ice from around the fan.
- Test the fan motor: With the freezer unplugged, disconnect the fan connector and measure resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit indicates a failed motor.
- Replace the fan motor: Remove mounting screws, transfer the fan blade to the new Hotpoint-compatible evaporator fan motor, and reinstall. Reconnect wiring and reassemble the rear panel.
- Restore power and test: Plug the freezer back in, close the door, and listen for the fan starting after the compressor engages.
