Possible Causes
Burnt relay on main PCB, Failed power supply section on control board, Corroded board connectors, Surge-damaged microcontroller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer and discharge any static from your body before touching electronic boards. Do not work on live circuits.
Steps:
- Confirm basic operation: Verify that the outlet has correct voltage and that the interior light and display work. If lights work but compressor never starts, suspect the control board or compressor circuit.
- Access the control board: On many Hotpoint freezers, the main PCB is located behind a rear metal cover or in a top control housing. Remove screws and covers carefully.
- Visual inspection: Look for burnt spots, cracked solder joints, or swollen capacitors on the board, especially near the compressor relay.
- Check connectors: Ensure all harness plugs are fully seated and free of corrosion. Reseat each connector once.
- Test compressor output: With the unit unplugged, identify the compressor output terminals on the board. After reapplying power and calling for cooling, a qualified person can test for voltage at these terminals (this step involves live voltage and is best left to professionals).
- Replace the board: If the compressor and start components test good but the board is not sending power, replace the main control board with an OEM Hotpoint part. Transfer any jumper settings or wiring exactly as on the original.
- Final check: Reassemble covers, restore power, and verify that the compressor starts and the alarm clears after temperature recovers.
