Possible Causes
Stuck or broken mechanical door switch, Faulty magnetic reed sensor, Misaligned door magnet, Damaged door switch wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing switch housings or trims.
Steps:
- Locate door switch: On Hotpoint freezers, the door switch is usually in the door frame near the top or side, or integrated into the control housing.
- Check operation: Press the switch plunger by hand. The interior light should turn on/off. If nothing changes, suspect the switch or wiring.
- Remove switch: Pry out the switch gently with a flat tool or remove screws, then pull it out to access the wires.
- Test continuity: Disconnect the switch and test with a multimeter while pressing and releasing the plunger. If it does not open/close properly, replace it.
- Inspect wiring: Look for broken or loose wires behind the switch area.
- Replace switch or sensor: Install a new OEM Hotpoint door switch or magnetic sensor, reconnect wires, and secure it in place.
- Test alarm: Restore power and confirm that the door alarm only sounds when the door is actually open.
