Possible Causes

Misaligned door magnet, Weak or missing magnet in door, Faulty reed switch in cabinet, Damaged sensor wiring

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing trims or sensor covers.

Steps:

  • Identify sensor type: Many Hotpoint freezers use a magnetic reed sensor hidden in the cabinet and a magnet in the door edge.
  • Check door alignment: Ensure the door closes squarely and the gasket makes full contact. Sagging hinges can move the magnet away from the sensor.
  • Test magnet: Use a small metal object to confirm the magnet in the door still has pull. If it is missing or weak, the door may need a new magnet strip or door replacement.
  • Locate reed sensor: It is usually behind a small plastic cover in the frame. Remove the cover and inspect the sensor and wiring.
  • Replace sensor: If wiring is intact but the sensor does not change state when a magnet is placed near it, replace with a Hotpoint-compatible reed switch.
  • Adjust door: If hinges are loose, adjust or shim them so the door aligns correctly with the cabinet.
