Possible Causes
Failed PTC start relay, Defective compressor start capacitor (if fitted), Overheated or locked compressor, Loose or burnt compressor terminal connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer. The compressor area contains live mains connections.
Steps:
- 1. Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor and electrical box.
- 2. Visual inspection: Check the PTC relay and capacitor (if present) for burn marks, melted plastic, or a burnt smell. Inspect wiring for heat damage.
- 3. Check relay: Remove the PTC relay from the compressor pins. Gently shake it; if it rattles loudly or shows signs of burning, it is likely faulty and should be replaced.
- 4. Test capacitor (if fitted): Use a capacitance meter to verify the µF rating matches the label. Replace if out of tolerance or shorted.
- 5. Inspect compressor terminals: Ensure the pins are not burnt or loose. Do not power the compressor with covers removed.
- 6. Replace start device: Install a new OEM PTC relay (and capacitor if required) designed for the specific IKEA/Whirlpool/Electrolux compressor model. Refit the cover and secure wiring.
- 7. Power up and monitor: Plug the freezer back in and listen for the compressor to start smoothly. If F5 returns and the compressor hums then clicks off, the compressor itself may be mechanically locked and require professional replacement.
Warning: Compressor and refrigerant system work beyond the start device should only be done by a licensed refrigeration technician.
