Possible Causes
Stuck-closed mechanical thermostat (on manual-dial models), Shorted temperature sensor, Main control board not responding to sensor input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the freezer before accessing the control housing or thermostat.
Steps:
- Identify control type: Manual-dial Insignia freezers use a mechanical thermostat; digital models use an electronic sensor and control board.
- Mechanical thermostat test: Remove the control knob and housing. Disconnect the thermostat and test continuity. It should open when turned to OFF/WARM. If it remains closed, replace the thermostat.
- Electronic sensor test: For digital models, test the cabinet thermistor resistance at known temperatures. Replace if shorted or out of spec.
- Control board: If the sensor is good but the compressor never cycles off, replace the main control board.
Note: After replacing controls, allow 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize.
